Kutta Technologies has developed the next-generation of medium frequency radios to provide mine operators with a reliable, cost-effective solution to communication needs.
Emergency communication system for mines
The Digital Radio for Underground Miners (DRUM) was developed with funding from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and was designed to meet the intent of the MINER Act for a redundant communications system. The DRUM is an ideal emergency backup communication system in large mines, and can be used as an inexpensive primary communication system in medium and small mines.
Digital Radio for Underground Miners (DRUM)
The DRUM works by wirelessly sending voice and data signals using the existing mine infrastructure. Pipes, leaky feeder cables, phone lines, wire-core lifelines and other metallic infrastructure allow for our signal to transmit up to 4 miles between nodes.
Unlike other radios, the DRUM is not limited to line-of-sight communications and will even continue to work while the mine power is off. Our radios have been submitted for MSHA approval and are designed to safely function in a methane environment.
Interoperable mine communication system
The DRUM is also interoperable with other mine communication systems. Tracking systems, CO2 monitors and other equipment can communicate over the ad-hoc network. Additionally, our DRUM radios are fully functional with any VHF / UHF leaky feeder systems, eliminating the need to purchase new handsets.
DRUM 100 Portable Mine Communication Radio
Point-to-point voice communication (4+ miles)
Interoperable with DRUM 100 Repeater
Dedicated wiring is not required
Great for back-up communication and leaky feeder extensions in large mines
Mine-wide coverage in small mines
DRUM 100 Cross-Band Repeater
Wireless extension of leaky feeder
Interoperable with existing UHF or VHF radios
Cross-band repeater between UHF / VHF and medium frequency (MF)
DRUM 200 Repeater and Portable Mine Communication System
Supports both voice and data communications
Digital, packet-based communications allows other devices to send data over the network
Auto-routing and self-healing multi-hop network
Interoperates with existing UHF or VHF radios
